This morning we were proud to have the F/V Melanie back at our dock with a load of Halibut.

Captain Tary Middlesworth delivered this load from area 3B. Known as the “Boneyard” by local fishermen, 3B can be a very difficult area to fish. Area 3B starts on the south end of Kodiak Island and extends south down the Alaska Peninsula, towards the Aleutian Chain.

Capt. Tary plans on heading right back out to make a 3A trip. 3A is the fishing area right out in front of the city of Kodiak, fishing is much easier and closer. After the next few halibut trips, the Melanie and her crew will head out west to tender salmon in the Port Moller and the Bristol Bay area.

Bering Sea Snow Crab, also known as Opilio Tanner, is smaller than the Bairdi Tanner crab that is harvested in the bays surrounding Kodiak Island. This beautiful, bright orange crab is filled with snow white, sweet meat and is now available in the retail store and online.

The 2013 winter cod fishery is still going strong. Last week the fishermen saw some really big tides, making setting and hauling thier gear a little tricky. The large tides have subsided and the fishing has picked up quite a bit. The F/V Butterfly, one of our Russian longliners, arrived at the Island Seafoods dock this morning with over 35,000 pounds of fresh Pacific Cod. With his stern dangerously low in the water captain Konstantine Basragin was relieved when the dock crew started to pump fish from his tanks.

Once inside the plant, the processing crew turns the Pacific Cod into both fresh and frozen fillets bound for supermarkets and restuarants around the country.

Open to fixed gear types, pot, longline and jig, this cod fishery extends outside the 3 mile nautical line, into federal waters. The begining of the season started out pretty slow even though the weather was much milder than last January. The posted price from the local processors was lower than expected and many fishermen decided to sit tight in town and wait for the price to settle out. This picture shows many of the Russian longliners tied up in the harbor.

While some boats stayed tied up in the harbor, others prepaired for the opener. Here crew from the F/V Stella load cod pots on the south side of the dock.

Down on the south end of Kodiak Island, the crew of the F/V Clyde was setting gear right at the start. It is a 12 hour run from the fishing grounds back to Island Seafoods, so the F/V Kendra H is under contract to tender cod back to the dock. By unloading the harvested cod right to the Kendra H, the Clyde and the Stella can stay on the fish instead of losing a whole day of fishing time and wasted fuel by heading back to town. Here are some shots sent by Jason Klein of the Clyde. The Clyde is a longline vessel. They set out thousands of baited hooks connected to a single ground line that sits on the bottom of the ocean. The Clyde uses tub gear and each hook is baited with a chunk of squid by hand. Lots of baiting!

As long as the fishing stays good, The Clyde plans on fishing through March right into the start of Halibut Season. We will be producing fresh Pacific Cod fillets each and every day until then, so if you would like to try some fresh cod harvested by the Clyde Guys, give us a call. 888-355-8575.

Enjoy!

A gale warning in the forcast delayed the opening for 24 hours, but the storm blew through and pots started hitting the water at noon Wednesday. Around 50 vessels are registered to participate in the small but lucrative fishery. With a smaller quota than last season, down to 660,000 pounds, competition will be strong. As if crab fishing in the Gulf of Alaska isn’t challenging enough, this season a new obstacle is being presented to the local fishermen. The battered Shell drilling rig Kulluk is temporarily anchored inside of Kiliuda Bay on the east side of Kodiak Island awaiting reports on the condition of her hull. Much of the fishing efforts are centered just outside of Kiliuda Bay and the surrounding area. The drill rig should not be in the way of the actual fishing activies but the increased number of large support vessels in the area could add some excitement to an already short and fast paced fishery.
The processor we are working with again this year is filling a large order for thier Japanese customer of “green” crab. Green crab is simply butchered, cleaned and frozen raw. Cooked Kodiak Tanner Crab should be available early next week. Call or email me to reserve your fresh cooked crab.

Spring is here in Kodiak and the waterfront is starting to buzz with activity. June 9th marks the official start of the Kodiak Salmon season and the Island Seafoods salmon fishermen are starting to show up ready to get to work. Salmon seines can be seen around town, stretched out to mend holes and make repairs from the 2011 season. Stripping the cork line, adding a new rib line or replacing a worn out purse line, there is always something that can be done to make the seine fish a little better.

On May 1st, the Gulf of Alaska Pacific Ocean Perch or POP season opened and the F/V Stella headed out to catch her share of the quota. For the first part of this season, Captain Peter McCarthy is turning the captain’s chair over to his brother James so he can spend some time with his family. James just finished his second trip, delivering a mix of Dusky and Northern rockfish.

Most of the POP and Northern Rockfish are headed and gutted and frozen in 40 pound blocks. The frozen blocks are loaded into 40 foot containers and shipped to either China or Korea. The dusky rockfish are filleted by hand, vacuum sealed and flash frozen for some of our wholesale customers and to be featured online and in the retail store. Dusky Rockfish offer a mild tasting, bright white small flake fillet perfect of pan frying, deep frying in your favorite batter mix or blackened.

The Pacific Halibut and Black Cod season opened this year on March 17th with limited effort in the first few weeks. The Federal Pacific cod fishery was still open and many of the big halibut harvesters were still out targeting Pacific Cod. Now that the “A” season closed, the effort has picked up in the last few weeks. We have had several deliveries including a recent one from the Seward based F/V Tribute. We can expect deliveries of fresh halibut throughout the next few weeks as fishermen look to fill their quotas.
