Microwaving Alaskan Crabs

Cooking crustaceans such as lobsters and Alaska king crab in the microwave hasn't necessarily been the method of choice for too many home chefs, but if having this option makes the difference between eating and not eating seafood, go for it.

Microwave cooking can be a bit trickier in some cases than other cooking techniques, but it's certainly doable. Alaskan crabs, especially frozen pre-cooked ones, can indeed be microwaved; they just need the cook's close attention for proper doneness. The safest way to accomplish this is to seal each serving inside a plastic steamer bag (or a bowl sealed with plastic wrap) with a tablespoon of water inside the container. Microwave at full power for about 6 minutes, plus a minute or so more for larger weights, not to exceed 15 minutes. Because microwaved meals continue cooking after they're removed from the oven, it is preferable to undercook slightly, especially if there will be a few minutes between cooking and serving. By the time guests crack open those pretty red shells, the juicy meat will be just right.
